At the MIKROLAB laboratories, blood is drawn exclusively with a butterfly needle by specialised staff trained in painless blood collection.
How often you need blood tests depends on your age and, of course, on any existing conditions.
Preventive laboratory testing starts in a child’s first year of life and should be repeated every year. From the age of 40, a blood check-up should be carried out every 6 months, so that any problem is diagnosed early and treatment starts without delay. When a condition is already present and being monitored, testing is more frequent and always follows the instructions of the treating doctor.
A check-up certainly includes a complete blood count, a basic biochemistry panel with cholesterol, kidney and liver markers, TSH for the thyroid, the inflammation markers CRP and ESR, a urinalysis, antinuclear antibodies (ANA) and more.
Efstathia Ch. Christou, medical biopathologist and microbiologist, can recommend a laboratory work-up tailored to you, based on your medical history and anything that concerns you about your health.
For most tests you do not need to fast. When the check-up includes triglycerides, cholesterol or glucose, however, you need to fast for 10 to 12 hours. For the other biochemistry markers, 2 hours of fasting is enough.
For some hormones, such as cortisol, blood must be drawn at a specific time, between 7:00 and 10:00 in the morning; for prolactin you need to have been awake for 2 hours, as the hormone is secreted during sleep. Contact us for full guidance on how to prepare correctly before your tests.

No appointment is needed for routine tests: simply come in any day during our opening hours. For a vaginal culture and for the NIPT test you will need to book an appointment.
