Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic syndrome is a condition that combines several risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and insulin resistance. These factors increase the likelihood of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Diagnosing metabolic syndrome involves measuring waist circumference, checking blood pressure and blood tests to assess glucose, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels.
Specifically, metabolic syndrome is considered present when at least two of the following criteria are met:
- waist circumference greater than 102 cm in men and 88 cm in women, blood pressure of 130/85 mmHg or higher,
- fasting glucose of 100 mg/dL or higher,
- triglycerides of 150 mg/dL or higher,
- HDL (“good”) cholesterol below 40 mg/dL in men and 50 mg/dL in women.
Preventing metabolic syndrome involves lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, regular exercise and stress management. Weight loss can be crucial in reducing the risks. When lifestyle changes are not enough, medication may be needed to control blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar.
Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to prevent serious complications. Patients should monitor their health parameters regularly and work with their healthcare professionals to develop a personalised management plan. The laboratory work-up for metabolic syndrome includes:
- Complete blood count
- Fasting glucose
- Insulin
- Cholesterol (TC)
- Triglycerides (TGs)
- HDL and LDL
- Uric acid
- HOMA-IR (insulin resistance index)
The cost of the test is €70
