Short biography
Efstathia Ch. Christou, MD, MSc, began her specialty training in medical biopathology (microbiology) at the Andreas Syngros Hospital, where she specialised in fungal cultures and in the collection and processing of skin and nail scrapings and vaginal swabs. She continued and completed her specialty at the Laiko General University Hospital of Athens, where she trained in the culture of all biological fluids, in haematology (haematological markers, the investigation of anaemias and haematological diseases), as well as in biochemistry and immunology.
For many years she served as scientific director at some of the largest diagnostic laboratories in Athens, gaining expertise and experience in modern diagnostic methods.
Driven by a spirit of service to the community, Dr Christou also turned to public health: she completed the postgraduate programme of the School of Medicine of the University of Athens and holds an MSc in “Global Health – Health Crisis Management” from the Athens Medical School. During the COVID-19 pandemic she worked at the operations centre of the National Public Health Organization (EODY), providing her medical services in the management and control of COVID-19, from diagnostic sampling to case management. Alongside her work at EODY, in 2020 she founded the MIKROLAB microbiology laboratory in Chalandri, where she pioneered the introduction of rapid molecular testing for the detection of Covid-19. The laboratory was equipped with the latest technology, covering the full range of laboratory tests with prompt, reliable results for urgent and routine cases alike.
She has taken part in numerous conferences and holds a Diploma in Disaster Medicine, Victims Management, BLS and other certifications. She is a member of the Athens Medical Association and of the Hellenic Society for Microbiology.
