Rapid Diagnostic Tests
Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are diagnostic tools that provide quick results for the detection of infections or other conditions. They are widely used when the speed of diagnosis is critical for immediate treatment. These tests are particularly useful in settings with limited resources, such as clinics, emergency cases and areas with limited access to laboratory infrastructure.
Rapid diagnostic tests are easy to use, require minimal equipment and training, and give results within a short time, usually 15 to 30 minutes. For viral infections such as COVID-19 or influenza, these tests detect the virus’s antigens or the body’s antibodies, while for bacterial infections they may detect the bacterium or its products in the sample.
Some of the best-known rapid diagnostic tests include tests for influenza, COVID-19, streptococcus and allergies. They are also used in other medical situations, such as pregnancy and the detection of diabetes.
Although rapid diagnostic tests are extremely useful because of their speed, their accuracy can be affected by various factors, such as the quality of the sample or the duration of the infection. In some cases, the results may need to be confirmed with more specialised tests. Nevertheless, their use continues to expand, offering fast and effective diagnosis in many clinical situations.
