Allergy Testing
Allergen tests are a key tool in the diagnosis of allergies and are used to identify the substances that trigger allergic reactions in the body. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to substances known as allergens, which normally cause no problem in other people. Common allergens include pollen, dust, dust mites, foods, medicines, insects and animals.
Several types of allergen test are used to detect an allergic reaction. The most common methods are the skin test and blood tests. In the skin test, small amounts of allergens are placed on the skin, which is then lightly pricked or scratched. If the patient is allergic to one of the allergens, a local reaction such as redness or itching appears.
The blood test analyses the blood for IgE antibodies, which the body produces in response to allergens. This method is usually used when a skin test is not possible or when a more precise diagnosis is required.
Correct diagnosis of allergies with the help of allergen tests makes it possible to assess the cause of allergic reactions and prescribe the appropriate treatment. The results help manage allergies better, allowing patients to avoid the allergens and to follow prevention and treatment strategies, such as antihistamines or immunotherapy.
