Metabolic Syndrome

metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is a condition that combines several risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and insulin resistance. These factors increase the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. To diagnose metabolic syndrome, tests include measuring waist circumference, checking blood pressure, and blood tests to evaluate glucose, triglyceride and HDL cholesterol levels.

Specifically, it is defined that metabolic syndrome is present when at least two of the following criteria are met:

  • waist circumference greater than 102 cm for men and 88 cm for women, blood pressure 130/85 mmHg or higher,
  • fasting glucose levels of 100 mg/dL or higher,
  • triglycerides of 150 mg/dL or more
  • HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) below 40 mg/dL for men and 50 mg/dL for women.

Prevention of metabolic syndrome involves lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, regular exercise and stress management. Weight loss can be critical to reducing risks. In cases where lifestyle changes are not enough, medication may be needed to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol or blood sugar.

Early diagnosis and intervention are critical to prevent serious complications. Patients should regularly monitor their health parameters and work with their healthcare professionals to develop an individualized management plan.Laboratory testing for metabolic syndrome includes:

  • General blood
  • Glucose (Sugar) fasting
  • Insulin
  • Cholesterol (TC)
  • Triglycerides (TGs)
  • HDL and LDL
  • Uric acid
  • HOMA-IR (Human Insulin Resistance Index)

The cost of the test is 70€
