Blood tests

Blood tests

All hematology tests are performed in the approved laboratory of MIKROLAB..

By the term checkup we imply the amount of information we can obtain about the functions in our body through common blood tests.

Basic tests required are a complete blood count, a biochemical control, a hormonal test and a urinalysis (general urine test).

Through the complete blood count, we check the red blood cells, the hematocrit and the hemoglobin, assessing their levels we can determine if there is anemia. In the complete blood count we will also check the number of white blood cells, their increase or decrease indicates the existence of an infection. The type of white blood cells or more specifically the percentage of neutrophils, lymphocytes, mononuclear of eosinophils can help us understand the type of infection which we are facing. Neutrophilia is usually indicative of a microbial infection, while lymphocytosis indicates viral infection, the diagnosis of course will be made following a detailed virological or microbial control. Nonetheless we should always take into account the complete blood count and urine culture test when dealing with the most common infections of the human body.

An essential biochemical control includes liver enzymes SGOT, SGPT, ALP, bilirubin as well as GT, the main marker of cholestasis, urea, creatinine which are the main indicators of renal function. Lipid control includes total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides which are indicators of coronary heart disease and should be checked on a regular basis.

A complete blood test should also include CRP and TKE as markers of inflammation, these are the first tests that must be requested in order for the physician to determine the presence of an inflammatory condition. Then a specialized investigative test we be required to identify the causative agent.

Through the blood tests that are recommended to be performed annually, the function of the thyroid gland must also be checked. The main hormones examined are TSH, T3 and FT4. The regulator of the thyroid gland is TSH, in case that its levels are found increased or decreased, further investigation is advised with testing the levels of T3, T4 as well as the anti-TPO and anti-TG antibodies.

Complete blood tests are recommended to be performed annually from the age of 2 years. They help the prevention of diseases as well as lead to the early diagnosis of several conditions and the timely initiation of appropriate treatments.

Our laboratories follow the instructions of the World Health Organization regarding the methods of diagnosis, the collection and transfer of samples and more importantly the reference values of all tests.
